Airport Survival 101

Airports can be bustling hubs of excitement and stress, especially for those who don't travel frequently. From security lines to navigating terminals and potential flight delays, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. But fear not! With a well-thought-out plan and a few tips in your arsenal, you can breeze through airports and ensure a smooth and enjoyable journey. In this Airport Survival Guide, we've got you covered with valuable insights and strategies to help you navigate the skies with ease.

However, with some preparation and know-how, you can breeze through the airport and make your journey a lot more pleasant. Here's our definitive guide to stress-free airport travel.

1. Preparation is Key

a. Check-in Online: Most airlines offer online check-in 24-48 hours before your flight. This not only saves you time but also ensures you have a seat on the plane, especially during peak travel seasons. You can usually get a digital copy of your boarding pass or have your boarding pass emailed to you so you can print it before you head to the airport. In most cases, you can also purchase and check in your luggage prior to your arrival at the airport! This will help speed up the check-in process.

b. Pack Smart: Know the baggage and liquid restrictions for your airline and country. Having a luggage scale can help you avoid unexpected overweight baggage fees.

c. Travel Documents: Ensure your passport, visa, and any other required documents are up-to-date. Some countries require passports to be valid for six months beyond your return date.

2. Arrive Early

Arriving at the airport at the right time is crucial. For domestic flights, aim to be at the airport at least 2-3 hours before departure, while international flights may require 3-4 hours. Check with your airline for their specific recommendations. Depending on what airline you're flying out of, as your travel agent I'll give you suggestions on when to head to the airport - but it's always safer to be there on the early side. If you're a frequent traveler, enrolling in TSA PreCheck or Global Entry programs can be a game-changer. These programs expedite security screening, saving you valuable time and stress.

3. Choose the Right Time to Fly:

To avoid the crowds, consider scheduling your flights during non-peak hours. Midweek flights and early morning or late evening departures often result in less congestion at the airport.

4. Dress for Success

a. Easy Shoes: Opt for slip-on shoes that are easy to take off and put on at security checks.

b. Minimal Jewelry: Metal detectors don't like too much bling. Keep it simple.

c. Comfort is Crucial: Remember, you might be sitting for hours, so wear loose, comfortable clothing.

5. Travel Essentials

a. Snacks: Airports can be expensive. Pack some snacks to keep you fueled during waits. Save on water, by packing an empty reusable water bottle. Then fill it up after you pass through security! You can usually find a water fountain near the restrooms.

Some of my favorites: Granola bars, graham crackers, Babybell Cheese, Carrots with lime and tajin, a cut up apple, pretzels, grapes, Lara bars, Mott's Fruit Snacks.

b. Entertainment: Load up your devices with movies, music, or books. Download your Spotify playlists, download a few episodes on Netflix, and make sure you've charged your devices.

Checklist:

- Spotify

- Apple Music

- Podcasts

- Audio Books

- Netflix

- Disney+

- Game Updates

- Offline download any documents you may need

c. Chargers: Always have a portable charger. Outlets can be in high demand at airports. Consider bringing a rechargeable battery!

d. Suitcase: Grab a durable, four-wheel, suitcase. Consider brands like American Tourist, Away, Samsonite, and Calpak. Purchase great compression packing cubes to make the most of your suitcase's space.

6. Know the Layout

Airport maps can be found online. Familiarize yourself with your departure terminal, the location of the security checks, and where your gate is. This will be especially important if you have a quick layover from one flight to another. You'll want to plan your path from one flight to the next if possible. Sometimes this information isn't available because gates change so often - so check in with the flight attendants on your flight for up-to-date information!

7. Stay Informed

a. Apps: Airlines often have their own apps that provide real-time flight information.

b. Text Alerts: Many airlines offer SMS updates on flight changes. I highly recommend signing up for these!

8. Get Through Security Like a Pro

a. Prepare Ahead: Have your boarding pass and ID ready. Take off your belt, shoes, and jacket if required.

b. Liquids: Remember the 3-1-1 rule for carry-ons in many countries: 3.4 oz (100 ml) bottle or less for each liquid, all placed in a 1-quart-sized clear plastic zip-top bag.

c. Tech: Usually, laptops and large electronics need to be placed in separate bins.

d. Streamline Your Packing:

Packing efficiently can make a significant difference in your airport experience. Consider packing in a carry-on to avoid baggage claim waits and extra fees. Make sure you adhere to your airline's baggage policy and weigh your bags in advance.

9. Relax Before Your Flight

a. Lounges: Many credit cards offer access to airport lounges, where you can enjoy quieter seating, complimentary snacks, and Wi-Fi.

Even if you can't access a lounge, most large airports have spaces for guests to hang out, rest, charge their devices, and prepare for their flights.

b. Walk Around: Stretch your legs before the flight, especially if it's a long one.

10. Stay Hydrated

Airplane air is notoriously dry. Drink plenty of water before and during your flight.

11. Be Polite

Remember, airline and airport staff are doing their best, especially during peak times. A smile and polite attitude can go a long way.

By following these tips and strategies from our Airport Survival Guide, you can navigate the airport with confidence, making your journey more enjoyable and stress-free. Remember, the airport is just the starting point for your adventure, and with a positive attitude and a well-organized approach, you'll be well on your way to creating wonderful travel memories. Safe travels!
